President Bush has vetoed a ban on waterboarding. According to the Washington Post, Bush said the ban would take away "one of the most valuable tools in the war on terror." Nancy Pelosi is hoping to try and get enough votes to override the veto, but the original voting margins don't show a high possibility of doing so.
The CRAZY thing is, McCain actually supports this bill. Wasn't he a POW forever? You'd think that he wouldn't want other people to go through the same things that he did. And even though both Hillary and Barack oppose the ban, neither of them showed up to vote on it due to rigorous campaign schedules. I think the whole country (myself included) is getting so wrapped up in the election that we are letting Bush off easy and we are forgetting everything else! Like...Iraq maybe?!
Why can't people see that torture is wrong and that it sends so many mixed messages about our country? We say "Oh hey you guys, we hate tyrants and dictators and we want you to have all these rights." AND THEN, we go and waterboard and torture people like the Khmer Rouge and the dictators in Burma and who knows where else. So basically, it is okay for us to arrest them for torture and call it terrorism, but when we do the same thing, it called safe-guarding and freedom.
