Good For You Sarah!

As most of us probably know, Sarah Palin recently stunned the political world by suddenly announcing her resignation as Governor of Alaska. Of course, this seems like political suicide. After all, who elects a person who quits half way through their job? And yet, for all the things that could go wrong with this decision, I can't help but think that there are many things that could go right.

Firstly, I do believe that her intentions were honorable. If we know one thing about Sarah, it's that she loves Alaska more than anything. I really do believe that she didn't want to put Alaskans through everything everyone put her through and that as a Republican, she would hate to see their tax money go to waste. I think she truly did believe that she would get nothing done and didn't want to waste away in her seat just earning an income.

Secondly, polls have revealed that people will still listen to her. She has no trouble garnering attention from the media and could very well have good enough standing to accomplish something on a national scale (perhaps a charity or something?). She did say that was her intention upon leaving office.

Thirdly, I think she will be much happier now. She's seemed so miserable since the end of election season. I've never seen her more happy in an interview than when she took Good Morning America fishing with her and the family.

Okay, so maybe her political career is over. Like she said, "If I die politically, I die." Maybe there are different things ahead for her. And maybe she was making the right decision not to waste people's money and time just sitting in an office doing nothing. We'll have to see. I say, good for you Sarah! You stuck to your gut and you may still come out on top. And if you don't, at least you'll be happy.

Essay on Life Part 1

I have decided to keep track of my observations and opinions on life. Here is the first part of an essay I've decided to write about them. More to come as it progresses.

I don’t know a lot of things, but I think I try pretty hard to figure things out. Through the course of my lengthy eighteen year life, I have come to several conclusions about life which I think should be paid special attention to.
Number one: If you don’t have something useful to say, don’t say it. Listen up all you Captain Obviouses out there. This one’s for you. The basic criterion for this rule are: Will what you say contribute significantly by adding knowledge or by furthering the conversation? Do people already know what you are about to say by using things known as “senses?” Has someone already made the point that you are about to make, but with different phrasing? Because if so, you should be accused of plagiarism of the mouth. Now, rule #1 was established because of my family and the fact that they hate to follow this rule. Not only have they achieved the Captain Obvious status, they have actually been promoted and are now General Obiviouses. A typical occurance would be something like this. A family gathering. The older cousins sit around jealously watching the younger cousins open mountains of presents. Finally! The presents for us! I open my package to find a nice purple shirt laid amongst the tissue paper. Mom comes over. “Oh my gosh! Honey, it’s purple! Do you see that? Wow purple is my favorite color. That is such a nice shade of purple. Who gave you this? Oh do you see that purple?” At this point, I turn to her and say, “Why yes mother. God has blessed me with this wonderful gift called vision. And since you’ve been on every doctor visit with me since I was born, you should know that I often use it and that I, in fact, am not color blind.” She then responds with a terrible look that would be a slap were we not in public. As you can see, saying that the shirt was purple did not contribute to the conversation whatsoever. Were I not even a little sarcastic in my response, it would have probably been an abrupt, “Why yes. It is purple,” leading the conversation on a bridge to nowhere. Maybe if the conversation was “Oh this is from Gap! I heard they enslave African children to harvest their cotton!” Then maybe we could have gone somewhere with that. Maybe. As you can see, sometimes it is best to say nothing at all. Some people call me quiet. I call myself selective.

Bette gives the word "different" a whole new meaning.

Today I had nothing to do so I checked out youtube and in the recommended for me was a Bette Davis interview from 1988 with Larry King. She said something that caught my attention, so I wrote it down.

"If you've never been done as a caricature, you have nothing. You don't have anything definite. You don't have a way of speaking that's different. You don't have mannerisms that are different. Really and truly, I was glad when they characterized me."

I love this quote because it says something about people who are individuals. It may be just what people mean when they talk about the "it" factor. There has to be something different about you to make you noticable. I think she may have unintentionally and wittily described an important factor to success! Now I will take it as even more of a compliment if anyone calls anything I do different.

Facebook Quizzes

I have to admit that I am one of those people who think by taking a random quiz probably created by a bored 15 year old on a Sunday afternoon on Facebook that I will learn something about myself. And indeed I have. Here are some of my favorites:

Were I a mythical creature, I would be a nymph. The thought hadn't occured to me due to their poor portrayal in Hercules.
My true ethnicity is German. This is appropriate because when most people try to guess my heritage, they pick Jewish.
Were I a leading lady on screen, I would be Bette Davis. This is actually my favorite result EVER as I am a tad obsessed with her. It also fits in with another quiz result saying I should have lived in the 40's. This is true.
If I were a Star Trek character, I would be Commander Riker. This is lame for a number of reasons. 1 - I would not even be in the original series. Everyone knows Star Trek: The Next Generation was inferior to the original series. 2 - I would not get any face time with Spock, who is amazing and looks amazing thanks to Zachary Quinto. 3 - I am not a man.
What type of Wellesley Woman am I? Laid Back Chick. Okay fine. You win Facebook.
Well, I completely manipulated the Disney Villain quiz to get Maleficent because she is seriously just the best.
Had I a superpower, it would be telekinesis or telepathy. In all honesty, this would work best in our world. But if we were in the X-men's world, I would feel completely useless. Wolverine tears some guy to shreds and is the hero. Well guess what? He was thinking about tacos before he died. Congratulations.
And last and certainly least, my dream job would apparently be...a teacher. Gag me. If I become a teacher, Lord help those kids and make sure that the yellow pages can refer me to a good, cheap psychiatrist (because everyone knows my salary could not afford a good, expensive one).

At the end of the day, I really hope that I don't give off the aura that I am a German teacher who watches Bette Davis movies all day and secretly wishes she was a nymph. I hope I am a little more interesting than that.

Bush Determined to Give Country One Last Horrible Thing to Fix

Jobs lost in 2008: 2.6 million!!!
http://money.cnn.com/2009/01/09/news/economy/jobs_december/index.htm
According to the above website (which I trust, because it's CNN: the apparent most trusted name in news)the annual lost is the biggest since WWII, which if you don't remember was the RECOVERY for the GREAT DEPRESSION. Actually the unemployment rate was better in the late 40's. The unemployment rate has risen to 7.2% up from 6.7% in November.

I like to think of it as a summary of the Bush White House. Let's get our economy (and everything else) in the worst shape possible and then leave it for the next guy to clean up. Nice parting shots Mr. President. No...I give him too much credit. I can't solely blame him because it's not only his fault. But it is easy to do. Anyway...shame on you anyone who was involved in ruining the economy!

And Poor President Obama! Look at what he has to work with! You can tell he really is working very hard. I am not sure about his plan yet. Too many tax cuts too soon? WE have a $1.2 trillion debt. I don't know where all this money is coming from. But he needs support because we need to find a way!

Bush gets shoe thrown at him

His explination is probably funnier. Hahaha Barack would've caught one and yelled, "sit back down."

And where the heck is the secret service?! They need to protect our leaders from the looming menace of shoes.

10 Most Fascinating People of 2008

I was intrigued by the ads for Barbara Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People of 2008, so I decided to do that myself. However, I am not limiting myself to people who are...alive. We shall go backwards.

10. Heath Ledger
I'm obviously not the only person who found the Joker more than amazing. I was honestly surprised that Heath Ledger could think up this amazing persona. Method acting is just interesting in itself. I was sooooo sad about his death! We miss you!

9. Perez Hilton
I have become the most faithful perezhilton.com fan. It is the absolute BEST site for anything and everything celebrity. Perez is just amazing because he makes you want to be his friend whenever you hear him speak...and I love his hair.

8. Elizabeth Hasselbeck
It was just too funny to see her get creamed by every other View host during the election. No picture necessary.

7. Hillary Clinton
Hillary ran a very interesting primary campaign. There was a definite struggle between the ways of the old and the ways of the new. Plus, she is an amazing person and SECRETARY OF STATE!!!!

6. Nastia Liukin
Nastia outshined all of the other gymnasts at the Beijing Summer Olympics. But she did it without the hype of Shawn Johnson and Michael Phelps.

5. Barbara Walters
Barbara Walters was premiscuous?! According to her new book she was! Craaazzy. Her surprises surely fascinated me.

there you go, 2 for 1

4. Edith Piaf
La Vie en Rose was one of my favorite movies of the year, if not favorite. Her life was very interesting and her conflicts were basically... hard core. And listen to her music = godly.

3. Miley Cyrus
Miley fascinates me because throughout all of the rumors and all of the trainwreck things that she has been through, little kids are still obsessed with her. I don't know how she manages it. Her interview on Ellen explains it all.

2. Barack Obama
This one is just obvious.

and finally...

1. Sarah Palin
No one for a while has fascinated me more than Sarah Palin. Despite the fact that I disagree with everything she says, I still want to be her friend. She is so neighborly! Everything about her is literally hilarious with the accent and the hunting. She kills me. It's a strange strange enigma, but she is seriously fascinating.

My College Essay

Remember how people rip these off. YOU BETTER NOT.

Personal Statement
In seventh grade, I decided it was time to start a diary. Like any other tween, I had the intention of keeping it hidden in my room and pouring out my heart’s desires in it every night. So of course within a week of its inception, I brought it to school.
“What’s that?” my friend asked.
“Nothing,” I quickly replied, hugging the composition notebook to my chest. But for some reason, I realized that there was absolutely nothing I had written that I considered embarrassing. So I gave her the notebook.
What she found was a compilation of stickers, cartoons, and quotes that I found interesting or funny. “This is amazing!” she said. I was proud of myself; I had entertained someone for maybe five minutes, but it had made my day.
Word spread about my so-called diary, and soon I had friends approaching me and asking to read it. Before I knew it, the situation spiraled. The diary became “The Book.” It made its daily rounds to my closest friends and anyone who cared to read it.
There have been a total of five books since then, each one in a different colored composition notebook. In them, my friends and I made ourselves superheroes, created sticker collages, ranted politically, glued in the headlines of the day, drew our own cartoons, took polls, and compiled lists of our favorite things. The Book became a social staple. If anything happened at St. Michael School or around the world worth noting, it went in The Book, with an interpretation from a thirteen year old girl. I still wonder what Jon Stewart would say if he knew that I wanted him to be Press Secretary for the country I created.
It is intriguing to think of how little I have changed. I still have a dry sense of humor and still observe the most obscure things. My entry for the Easter of 2005 began: “Easter. Remembrance of our Lord being brutally murdered by capital punishment, now symbolized by a happy little bunny bouncing around distributing chocolates.” That entry led to the AEBA, The Anti-Easter Bunny Alliance. Always the environmentalist, I encouraged potential readers to “go hug a tree.” I also expressed my anger over someone stealing our John Kerry yard sign the same way I expressed it when our Obama yard sign disappeared. After Kerry’s loss in 2004, I wrote, “I found an article in USA Weekend about the 2008 election. Let’s go Hillary!” Four years later, I still supported her.
At the same time, I feel as if I have matured immensely. I don’t really spend time making vendettas against helpless holiday characters anymore. I’ve learned to take my political energy and channel it into useful activities such as registering voters, canvassing, and making phone calls, rather than purely ranting about what should be done. It is also reassuring that I broke my healthy addiction to Spongebob Squarepants by ninth grade.
The Book has greatly influenced who I am today. Had it been a traditional diary, I never would have gotten much of my friends’ input. It taught me to value other people’s opinions. Of course, it was annoying when people would write “Go Bush” everywhere, but in retrospect I can see that a one-sided story is a little boring. The Book made me realize that I love to write. The thrill of being the news source was exhilarating. It formed my goal to relay political information to the American people one day. It taught me to be who I am and to not be afraid of what others may think, say, or write about me.
I am still the same Isabel Custodio that I was in eighth grade. I am just refined, more mature, deeper. I am still the girl who enjoys going to political rallies more than birthday parties, who likes a good caveman comic every now and then, and who pastes pictures of her cats everywhere. The Book began the foundation of my adult being. We’ll just have to wait for Volume Six to see where I go from here.

ANTICIPATION

Okay, I admit I am little obsessed with Sarah Palin. Not because she is a great political figure or because I agree with her policies, but because she is a total trainwreck in those interviews and it makes me laugh. I mean from the Bush Doctrine, (my favorite line EVER : In what respect Charlie?) to the voice...I just love them. Obviously it's terrible that she can't answer those questions and that she could be the next veep...but for now, it is just fun to make fun of her.

So in terms of the title of this post, I am MAJOR EXCITED for the Biden Palin debate tonight. I hope he wipes the floor with her.

Hilarious Daily Show Article

Here is a Daily Show article about the Pig-Pit Bull-Lipstick love triangle.

George Saunders -- who would be my literary boyfriend if I were a gay lipstick-wearing pit bull -- breaks down the significance of Sarah Palin's defining moment as a politician...

...when Barack Obama says he will put some lipstick on my pig, I am, like, Are you calling me a pig? If so, thanks! Pigs are the most non-Elite of all barnyard animals. And also, if you put lipstick on my pig, do you know what the difference will be between that pig and a pit bull? I'll tell you: a pit bull can easily kill a pig.

And, as the pig dies, guess what the Hockey Mom is doing? Going to her car, putting on more lipstick, so that, upon returning, finding that pig dead, she once again looks identical to that pit bull, which, staying on mission, the two of them step over the dead pig, looking exactly like twins, except the pit bull is scratching his lower ass with one frantic leg, whereas the Hockey Mom is carrying an extra hockey stick in case Todd breaks his again. But both are going, like, Ha ha, where's that dumb pig now? Dead, that's who, and also: not a smidge of lipstick.

A lose-lose for the pig.

There's a lesson in that, I think.

I was wondering what that joke meant exactly.

Now I totally get it.

hahahahah

Tina Fey absolutely NAILED Sarah Palin. You can barely tell them apart. Here is the hilarious SNL skit:

Lil Palin is Preggers!

Sarah Palin's 17 YEAR OLD daughter is pregnant!!! Yay! Republican family values! I'm sure that is terribly embarrasing, and let's be honest: it's a bad bad deal for the campaign. I just thought I'd get that out there. It's a little hilarious.

Sarah WHO?!

I am absolutely at a loss for words. John McCain made the major asshole move of the year. He picked Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential Candidate. Sarah Palin is the governor of Alaska - but she is in her first term - less than two years into her first term. Her background includes roles as mayor, city council, and PTA! Wow! What a level of experience! I'm SURE she is qualified to deal with the likes of Iran and North Korea. Her academic credentials include a bachelors in communications journalism from the prestigious University of Idaho. Not like Harvard or Columbia for Barack or anything. She has 5 kids, one with downs syndrome. Okay, so let's review: normal education, little experience, no foreign policy experience, and represents a state that is populated by elk and polar bears.

Look we all know why she was picked. She's a woman. SHE is a woman. What group was Barack having a hard time swaying? Women. Who became bitter at Hillary's loss? Women. It clear that John McCain must have had little interest in Pallin's qualifications. He knew that what he needed was a woman, someone to draw in the remaining stragglers from the feminist supporters of Hillary. I have to admit, it is an extremely clever move, but it is also an extremely annoying one.

No matter who you support you have to admit that Hillary Clinton worked hard on her campaign. She went so far and earned the respect and votes of 18 million people. As she put it, she may not have broken the glass ceiling, but she put quite a few cracks in it. Now this inexperienced woman comes out of nowhere and steals her thunder,as well as Barack's. Not only was the motive of choosing a woman strategic, but so was the timing. He announced his pick right after Barack's speech. What better way to distract the press from Barack's acceptance speech? Anyway, my point is, this pick is annoying because in one simple move, John McCain made Hillary's run unremarkable. I guess it's good- for women's rights- but it's a slap in the face to her. Barack's historical significance may be overlooked. John McCain had to do something to take that away from the Democrats. That assures that people may not vote for Barack just because it may be history in the making. Again, clever. But think of it this way: If John McCain's melanoma comes back and takes advantage of the fact that he's not as young as he used to be and worst comes to worst, we are stuck with President Palin - elligible for reelection, stuck without federal experience, stuck with a two year governor who is all ready in trouble for corruption, stuck with this woman who has been thrown into this race for the wrong reasons. That would be one of the tragedies ever. That would not how I would want the first female president to represent. I wanted Hillary to represent. We can't afford that now - not after eight years of this.

Jonas Brothers = Hanson

With the new Jonas Brothers Album released, and the entertainment media focusing on little else, I have spent more time thinking about the Jonas Brothers than I ever thought I would. Why? Because as a product of the 90's, I can't help but find the similarities they share with Hanson.
The most obvious similarity is that both bands consist of three members, all of whom are brothers. Both bands also share a complete lack of creativity when naming their bands, using the simplest technique - their last names. And in the Jonas case, adding the word "brothers." (Quick Note: Hanson started out as the Hanson Brothers) Another similarity is that the hottest band member is the middle child. Joe Jonas and Taylor Hanson not only share their good looks, but also the fact that they are the lead singers, both with frequent backup from the younger brothers, Nick and Zac. Let's not forget the often ignored older brothers, Kevin and Isaac, who both play guitar leads for their respective bands. Both bands have a rock sound, Hanson more grungy. Hanson and the JB'S also capture the style of the era. As I said, Hanson was grunge, and to be honest I don't know what you would call today's fashion, but the JB's have it.
I generally believe that Jonas Brothers will live and die like Hanson. I actually love both bands. They're good!!! But, let's be honest. When was the last time a boy band lasted more than a few years? Nsync? Backstreet Boys? Hanson? I think soon we will add the Jonas Brothers to the list. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Who doesn't go crazy when Bye Bye Bye comes on in the car? And no one denies the hotness of those bands. The JB'S will probably go the Nsync route in that their 1st album did pretty well, the 2nd album will be outrageous, and the 3rd album will be "eh" and maybe a little too sexual for the target audience. Overall, it can be said that the Jonas Brothers are the pop culture reincarnation of Hanson. And Miley Cyrus is the reincarnation of Britney Spears....We can only hope.

John Edwards is hot...and also a HUGE dick

Can you believe John Edwards? The man we were ready to elect Vice President, the man who came close to being our Presidential nominee, and the man who "dedicated his life" to poverty HAD AN AFFAIR. Not only is that saddening in itself, but his wife also has breast cancer. I don't think you can get lower than that. Cheating on your wife who has cancer. I am honestly appalled. I had a lot of respect for him. He's now denying that the other woman's child is his. I never thought he would be the next politician whose life would turn into an episode of Maury. I am really dissappointed. At least everyone expected it from Bill, and Hillary hadn't come down with Tuberculosis the day before. Not that that situation was any better. Ugh. This is getting annoying. DEMOCRATS: CONTROL YOUR LIBIDOS.

Some Things I Noticed About Peter Pan

I am currently watching Peter Pan, and I noticed a couple of things that I want to address.
1. Tinkerbell is kind of a bitch. She literally tells the Lost Boys to kill Wendy. THEN, she doesn't even deny it to Peter and is proud of the fact! Certainly not an image for little children in my opinion.
2. It's a little racist. Just watch one of the Indian scenes. They are literally red skinned and are completely stereotypical. Direct quote: "The Indians are cunning, but less intelligent." Wow. I realize this was made in 1953, but I thought we were over the whole oppressing the Natives thing by then. Maybe it was just a 50's "Red" thing.
3. Mermaids are whores. Look at the way they are all over Peter. I don't even think one of them is wearing a shell bra. Good thing Disney made up for itself with the Little Mermaid: a nice mermaid who falls for a man based on his statue.
4. Flying is the coolest thing ever. Arguably much better than a flying carpet.
5. Captain Hook has a reason to be angry. PETER CUT OFF HIS FREAKING HAND. I don't think we should be completely sympathetic to Peter. But with Tink's tendancies, I bet she was the one who told him to do it.
6. Disney has learned to sensor itself. No more drinking rum and smoking cigars for Disney characters. No more posing half nude either. They even have a Peace Pipe!!! And the kids smoke it! Product of the 50's I guess.
7. Wendy would be an annoying girlfriend. That's just obvious.

Okay. Well, I'm done watching the movie so...Bye.
